How One Oversight Brought an Entire Street to a Halt

A quiet street in Jūrmala turned into an unplanned traffic experiment after the driver of a timber lorry set off without folding away the vehicle’s crane. The arm reached high enough to catch the first metal gantry above the road. It clung to the structure with all the grace of a hook snagging a loose thread, then pulled the whole thing down.

The fallen framework blocked the street from kerb to kerb. Traffic froze. Drivers stared. Pedestrians did the sensible thing and kept their distance.

Emergency crews arrived to clear the wreckage and assess the scene. Despite the scale of the mess, no one was hurt, which felt almost miraculous given how solid the structure looked before its brief flight.

Authorities are now looking into how a moment’s forgetfulness managed to paralyse an entire stretch of road. A simple check would have kept everyone moving. Instead, the town got an abrupt lesson in the physics of heavy machinery and the value of folding things away properly.
