Business as Usual in Russia

It all began with a perfectly noble plan: to finally repair the floating crane Grigory Prosyankin, which had been languishing unfinished for years in occupied Sevastopol. The intention was good. The outcome, inevitably, was not. The vessel needed to be moved a little to begin repairs — and that’s when things went wrong.
As workers started shifting materials on board, the crane simply rolled onto its side, like a weary seaweed after a long day’s labour. The result: two dead, twenty injured, and one more glittering entry in the grand chronicle of Russian engineering triumphs.
Local officials say the cause is under investigation. Of course it is. And, as ever, the likely culprits will be the wind, the West, or a rogue Ukrainian dolphin that happened to swim in the wrong place at the wrong time.
