A near miss that could have ended far worse

A rural road in Latvia delivered a moment that would make any traffic investigator wince. The driver of a milk tanker decided to overtake where the markings left no room for interpretation. It was clearly forbidden. It was also reckless enough to deserve its own category in the Darwin awards.

The stunt forced an oncoming road grader to swerve off the tarmac. The manoeuvre was so tight that the heavy machine had to abandon the road entirely to avoid a head-on collision with an approaching lorry. A few metres and a few seconds made the difference between a shaky anecdote and a fatal report.

Common sense is still the best safety system

If anyone is tempted to imitate such heroics, perhaps keep the bravado for places where it serves a purpose. Public roads are not arenas for glory. They are shared spaces, and they reward calm judgement far more than theatrical risks.
