A motorist in China spent several days wondering why his car rattled and why the heating and cooling systems suddenly began to misbehave. The answer emerged quickly once he reached a service centre. The engine bay and air intakes were packed with hazelnuts. Mechanics spent hours clearing the stash, eventually piling up an astonishing 18 kilograms of nuts.

The culprits were not hard to identify. The car had been parked in a garage that kept squirrels out. In one corner, however, sat a large bag of hazelnuts, a generous open buffet for mice or rats. They hauled their treasure into the vehicle and remodelled the engine compartment into a perfectly insulated winter pantry.

The story works as a gentle reminder to lift the bonnet from time to time. You might find something far crunchier than engine noise.
