The End of Car Designers? Mercedes-Benz Chief Predicts AI Takeover in a Decade
The automotive design world is on the brink of a radical transformation, and according to Gordon Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz, human designers may soon become obsolete. He predicts that within the next ten years, artificial intelligence will take over the entire vehicle design process, rendering traditional designers unnecessary.
Wagener attributes this shift largely to the rise of electric vehicles, which are driving standardization in car aesthetics and engineering. Mercedes-Benz has already integrated AI into its design workflow, and as the technology evolves, it is reshaping the fundamental principles of vehicle development at an unprecedented pace.
While AI-generated designs are still largely impractical, a small fraction of its ideas are proving to be valuable and usable. Wagener's team is currently responsible for filtering out the impractical concepts and identifying those with real-world potential. However, as AI continues to learn and improve daily, Wagener envisions a future where machines can handle the majority of design tasks independently—ultimately making human designers redundant.
The age of AI-designed cars is closer than we think. The question remains: will human creativity still have a place in the automotive industry, or is this the dawn of an era where machines dictate the aesthetics of mobility?
