ZF has integrated its latest-generation steer-by-wire technology into NIO’s flagship electric vehicle, the ET9, eliminating the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. This state-of-the-art system consists of electronically controlled actuators and intelligent software, allowing for a dynamic steering ratio and enhanced maneuverability.

Steer-by-Wire Technology and Its Advantages
ZF’s steer-by-wire system transmits steering commands exclusively via a mechatronic actuator, completely removing the physical linkage between the steering column and the front axle. A steering wheel actuator equipped with an angle sensor processes input, while a torque feedback unit simulates a natural steering feel, dynamically adjusting to driving speed and road conditions.

This innovation enables more compact steering wheel designs, reducing the need for extensive turning motions during parking or low-speed maneuvers. When combined with ZF’s AKC (Active Kinematics Control) rear-wheel steering system, the technology significantly improves handling and comfort, especially for electric vehicles with a longer wheelbase. Additionally, removing the physical steering column enhances driver safety in the event of a collision.

With its latest steer-by-wire technology, ZF continues to push the boundaries of electrified and automated mobility, reinforcing its position as a leader in next-generation chassis systems.
