Toyota’s Boxy Little Van Aims for Adventure, at Least in Spirit
Toyota, seemingly convinced that any angular box can now be branded as “adventure-ready,” is developing a new vehicle meant to rival the likes of Mitsubishi’s Delica. According to Japanese outlet Motor Fan—citing, of course, unnamed sources—this is essentially a front-wheel-drive microvan dressed in rugged ambition.
The production version is expected to be based on the X-Van Gear concept (pictured), first shown in 2023. If things go according to Toyota’s plan, the vehicle could debut by the end of this year or early next spring. As usual, no official confirmation is forthcoming.
Built on the TNGA-C platform, it’s more suburban shuttle than off-road warrior, sharing its underpinnings with everyday models like the Noah and Voxy. That means engine options are set to include a 1.8-liter hybrid and a 2.0-liter gasoline powertrain.
The vehicle itself is expected to measure around 4.7 meters in length with a 2.9-meter wheelbase, offering compact proportions with big van intentions.
And then there are the doors—no B-pillar, just sliding panels designed for easy entry, or at least until the chassis decides to flex more than Japanese pavement permits.
As for pricing, reports suggest a ballpark of €20,000. Though it's unlikely this mini-van-on-a-mission will ever see European showrooms, it still stands as another curious blend of utility and marketing bravado in Toyota’s ever-expanding lineup.
