The Iconic Renault 4 Returns as an Electric Compact SUV

Renault has revived one of its most iconic models, the Renault 4, this time with a modern twist. Debuted at the Paris Motor Show, the Renault 4 E-Tech is a retro-styled compact electric SUV, paying homage to the legendary R4, which was produced from 1961 to 1994, with over 8 million units sold worldwide.

A Classic Shape Reimagined

The new Renault 4 E-Tech retains the distinctive, boxy body shape of its predecessor. Its rounded LED headlights are integrated into a sleek, nearly 1.5-meter-wide glossy front panel. The vertical, elongated taillights echo the design of the original R4. Additionally, the sliding fabric roof, available as an option, enhances the retro feel, reminiscent of classic convertibles, adding a touch of openness to the driving experience.

Modern Technology and Platform

Built on Renault’s AmpR Small platform (also known as CMF-B EV), which supports the latest in electric vehicle technology, the Renault 4 E-Tech shares its underpinnings with the Renault 5 E-Tech, launched earlier this year. While the technical platform is the same, both models draw design inspiration from different iconic Renault vehicles of the past.

The Renault 4 E-Tech offers a ground clearance of 181 mm, giving it modest off-road capability while still being ideal for urban driving. It features 18-inch wheels and a sturdy plastic body cladding that provides protection from minor scrapes and bumps.

At 4.14 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, and 1.57 meters high, the Renault 4 E-Tech is larger than its smaller sibling, the Renault 5, offering more spacious interiors and a generous 420-liter trunk, compared to the 326 liters of the Renault 5.

A Comfortable, Modern Interior

The interior of the Renault 4 E-Tech closely mirrors that of the Renault 5, featuring a digital dashboard and a 10.1-inch touchscreen for the multimedia system. The user-friendly controls include a simplified gear selector mounted on the steering column. Thanks to its larger body, the Renault 4 E-Tech offers a roomier cabin and greater practicality.

Electric Powertrains and Driving Range

The Renault 4 E-Tech comes in two versions, both with front-wheel drive and a single electric motor:

1. Urban Range: 120-horsepower motor with a 40 kWh battery, offering a driving range of up to 300 kilometers.
2. Comfort Range: 150-horsepower motor with a 52 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 400 kilometers.

Both versions support fast charging. Using a DC fast-charging terminal, the battery can charge from 15% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

A Classic for the Future

Production of the Renault 4 E-Tech will take place in France, with the first models expected to hit the market in spring 2025. While pricing is yet to be announced, the Renault 4 E-Tech is likely to cost more than the Renault 5, which starts at €24,000.
