To put it into perspective, the production of a typical SUV with a combustion engine emits up to 14 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e), and even a popular electric vehicle like the Polestar 2 can generate up to 24 tonnes of CO₂e during manufacturing. For Renault, the Emblème serves as a "laboratory on wheels," where the company is testing and showcasing the latest developments from its Ampere electric vehicle division and over 20 partner firms. Each partner is an expert in their field, contributing sustainable materials and advanced technologies to minimize the vehicle’s environmental impact. The project integrates renewable energy, low-carbon recycled materials, and bio-composites throughout the manufacturing process, making it a true showcase of what sustainable car production can look like. Aerodynamics and Design The Emblème’s aerodynamics have been optimized using technologies borrowed from Formula 1. In collaboration with the BWT Alpine F1 team, Renault developed a completely smooth underbody paired with an active diffuser, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.25. This level of aerodynamic efficiency ensures that the vehicle can maximize its energy use, minimizing losses and enhancing its driving range. This is particularly crucial given that the Emblème, including its battery, weighs 1,750 kilograms — comparable to a BMW 3 Series Touring. The innovative design combines practicality and elegance. With a shooting brake’s signature extended roofline, the Emblème blends sportiness with ample interior space, making it both dynamic and versatile. Thanks to hydrogen technology, it doesn’t sacrifice range or refueling speed, which have often been the main drawbacks for traditional electric vehicles. Powertrain and Range At the heart of the Emblème is a 218-horsepower rear-mounted electric motor powered by a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery. It also features a hydrogen fuel cell system with a 2.8-kilogram hydrogen tank, adding an additional 350 kilometers to the range. In total, the Emblème can cover up to 1,000 kilometers on a full tank. One of its main advantages is the quick refueling process: filling up the hydrogen tank takes just five minutes. In comparison, conventional electric vehicles require significantly longer charging times, making the Emblème an ideal solution for those who want to avoid long recharging stops on extended journeys. Hydrogen as a Fuel of the Future? Although hydrogen’s use as a fuel has been a subject of debate and its adoption has been slow, the Emblème demonstrates that hydrogen can be a viable alternative to battery-electric vehicles. The biggest benefits of hydrogen are its ability to offer long driving ranges and quick refueling times. Furthermore, the only emission from hydrogen consumption is water vapor, making it an attractive option from an environmental perspective.
