The new Nissan LEAF has been named the overall winner of the 2026 Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year award. This year’s competition included 55 contenders.

The prize is decided by a jury of 86 female automotive journalists representing more than 50 countries. Their evaluation focuses on what matters in everyday use, including safety, practicality, value for money and environmental impact.

A pragmatic approach to electric mobility

In its verdict, the jury highlighted the LEAF’s realistic approach to electric mobility.

The latest generation model introduces a more streamlined design, which promises improved driving range along with more intuitive technology. According to the jury, these qualities make the transition to electric driving easier for buyers who may not previously have considered an electric vehicle.

Rather than presenting itself as a technological showcase, the LEAF positions itself as a practical and accessible electric car designed for everyday life.

Recognition built earlier in the year

The award did not arrive entirely out of the blue. Earlier in the year, the same jury also named the Nissan LEAF the best compact car in the competition. Judges praised the model’s practical layout and its accessible approach to electric mobility.

Taken together, the results underline Nissan’s long standing role in the development of mass market electric cars. The LEAF helped introduce battery powered vehicles to a wider audience, and the latest generation appears determined to keep that role alive in a market that has become far more crowded than when the original model first appeared.
