The New BMW X7 to Feature Four Powertrains and a Bold New Design Language

BMW is preparing to launch an all-new generation of the X7 in 2027—one that goes far beyond a refreshed grille or a few extra chrome strips. This next-generation flagship SUV will arrive with a brand-new platform, a completely reimagined exterior, and, most notably, a diverse lineup of four distinct powertrains.

The first hints of this upcoming transformation were discovered buried within BMW’s financial reports, which reveal that development is already underway on the next-generation X5 and X7 models. For the first time, this confirms officially that the X7 will indeed have a successor.

Interestingly, the X5 and X7 are listed separately from the Neue Klasse lineup, suggesting they won’t share the same architecture. According to British outlet Autocar, the new X7 will transition to an updated CLAR platform, already in use under the 7 Series and i7. And that means one thing: for the first time ever, the X7 will be available as a fully electric SUV.

The upcoming X7 will offer four powertrain options:

Petrol engines (likely six- and eight-cylinder variants),

Diesel engines (still holding strong in certain corners of Europe),

Hybrids (including mild-hybrids and plug-ins),

And, of course, a fully electric version for those who want to reach the mountain lodge by five o’clock without leaving a trail of emissions behind.

Frank Weber, BMW’s Head of R&D, has confirmed that the company is entering a new phase where flexibility is key, and that engineers must break away from traditional platform dogmas. The next X7 will adopt a completely new design, aligned with the aesthetic of the Neue Klasse lineup—meaning no more visual distinctions between combustion and electric models. Everything will follow one unified, elegant, sharply defined design language—crafted to turn heads and challenge conventions.
