MG4 Rolls Out World’s First Mass-Market Solid-State Battery
MG, the brand with a British badge, Chinese soul, and SAIC’s deep pockets, is about to drop something that could make rival carmakers roll their eyes—and then scramble back to their R&D labs. On August 5, the all-new MG4 will debut in China as the first production car in the world to feature a solid-state battery.
The battery pack boasts a capacity of 70 kWh and promises a driving range of up to 537 kilometers on a single charge. Even better, compared to standard LFP battery packs, it performs 13.8 percent more efficiently in cold climates, such as –7 degrees Celsius.
This energy feeds a modest but entirely practical 163-horsepower rear-mounted electric motor, which tops out at 160 km/h—more than enough for those who don’t spend Mondays chasing lap times at the Nürburgring.
Dimensionally, the new MG4 has grown into itself: 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Wheel choices range from 16 to 17 inches. While its design won’t cause any jaws to drop, it now carries a noticeably more mature and refined presence than its predecessor.
The real kicker? Despite the tech leap, MG plans to keep pricing remarkably low for the Chinese market: between €8,700 and €13,000. A revolution in battery tech, served up at a bargain.
