Mercedes Heralds New Era with Electric GLC, Successor to EQC

The successor to the outgoing EQC will debut under a new name: GLC with EQ Technology. Its unveiling is set for no less than September’s IAA Mobility auto show in Munich.

Mercedes is calling this newcomer “the benchmark of the brand’s new face.” Dimensionally, the electric GLC falls squarely within the same category as its fossil-fuelled predecessor, which suggests that its appearance will likely remain familiar.

Some technical promises have already been teased. The GLC will feature an 800-volt architecture. If the claims hold true, the top-spec model will be able to draw enough charge in just ten minutes from a 320-kilowatt charger to deliver a driving range of 260 kilometers.

The next-generation electric GLC will also be equipped with a rear electric motor fitted with a two-speed reduction gear, along with what Mercedes is calling an all-new braking system. A heat pump, designed to draw warmth from both the motor and the battery, is expected to keep the cabin cool in summer and warm in winter.

And finally, the detail everyone’s been waiting for: the model name. The first to hit the market will be the dual-motor GLC 400 4Matic. Technical specifications are still under wraps.
