Mercedes Benz unveils a thoroughly refreshed S-Class

Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the updated S-Class, promising to push the luxury and performance of its flagship saloon to an even higher plane. The aim is clear enough, hold the attention of long standing customers with new engines and a screen setup that borders on theatrical.

This is not a radical design revolution. The S-Class still looks very much like itself. Yet Mercedes quietly reworked more than half of the car’s components to deliver a more contemporary and more technologically focused driving experience.

The front end now carries more visual authority thanks to a radiator grille that is roughly 20 percent larger than before. New headlights bring improved anti glare LED technology with a wider operating range, significantly boosting night time visibility. The effect is subtle rather than shouty, but the gains in clarity are immediately noticeable from behind the wheel.

Inside, the spotlight falls on the latest generation MBUX infotainment system. It links three displays into a single digital ecosystem, the driver’s instrument screen, the central touchscreen and a dedicated passenger display. Connectivity features are broader, the voice assistant is more capable and the whole cabin feels designed to pull both front and rear occupants into a responsive, adaptive environment rather than leaving them as passive passengers.

Among the updated powertrains, the headline act is an all new 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine. It uses an unusual crankshaft design that Mercedes introduces to the S-Class for the first time. With 530 horsepower, or 395 kW, and support from a 48 volt mild hybrid system, the big saloon surges from 0 to 100 km per hour in comfortably under four seconds.

Diesel and plug in hybrid versions remain part of the line up, offering a more measured blend of performance and efficiency for buyers who value range and restraint over outright speed.

Beyond screens and engines, the refreshed S-Class brings a long list of comfort focused upgrades. Rear seat passengers can now take part in video conferences, the climate system offers more precisely directed airflow, and even the seatbelts can be heated. An updated chassis promises improvements in both ride comfort and stability, reinforcing the car’s reputation as a long distance companion rather than a show pony.

Mercedes plans to launch the updated S-Class in the second half of 2026. Final pricing will depend on market and specification, but base models are already open for orders across Europe. It is a reminder that in the upper reaches of the luxury saloon world, evolution often matters more than revolution.
