Kia first conceived the idea for the EV9 in 2019, recognizing the growing popularity of SUVs and the limited availability of fully electric options in the segment. Their goal was to create a full-size electric SUV that would be as functional and practical as traditional internal combustion engine models while meeting modern demands for environmental friendliness, advanced technology, and contemporary design.

By 2021, the EV9 was unveiled as a concept car at the Los Angeles Auto Show, drawing significant attention with its futuristic and minimalist aesthetics, combined with impressive practicality. The interior emphasized spaciousness and technological innovation. The positive reception encouraged Kia to move swiftly toward prototypes and a production-ready model.

The Kia EV9 is among the first models to utilize the E-GMP platform, which supports long-range batteries, rapid charging, three rows of seats, and a spacious interior.

Production of the EV9 began in South Korea in 2023, with Kia positioning it as the flagship of its electric vehicle lineup. It was primarily targeted at North American, European, and Asian markets. The model was offered in various trims, catering to families and luxury-oriented buyers alike. With its 800-volt charging capability, advanced driver-assistance systems, and design elements carried over from the concept car, Kia positioned the EV9 as a more affordable competitor to premium electric SUVs like the Tesla Model X and BMW iX.

Key dimensions of the EV9 include:
Length: 5015 mm, Width: 1980 mm, Height: 1780 mm, Wheelbase: 3100 mm, Ground clearance: 177 mm.
With a curb weight of 2569 kg, the SUV offers a cargo capacity ranging from 308 to 2393 liters. The all-wheel-drive version features dual electric motors, one for each axle, delivering 192 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque each. It offers a range of up to 505 kilometers, although spirited driving—such as accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds or maintaining a top speed of 200 km/h—can significantly reduce this.

The EV9’s design is both powerful and modern. Its front end grabs attention with the futuristic "Digital Tiger Face" and a large, air-gulping grille. The robust, boxy aesthetic flows seamlessly into the side profile, where wide wheel arches and large alloy wheels reinforce the impression that the vehicle is ready for off-road adventures. At the rear, the minimalist design continues, highlighted by large, intricately shaped LED taillights that align with the overall design language.

The interior of Kia’s flagship is designed to maximize spaciousness. Thanks to the E-GMP platform, the floor is low and flat, creating an open and airy cabin atmosphere. The interior accommodates up to seven passengers, although the third row offers limited comfort. When fully occupied, the cargo space is minimal, but folding down the rear seats reveals a large, flat loading area suitable for larger items. Additionally, a small front trunk (“frunk”) provides space for smaller items or charging cables.

The second row epitomizes comfort, offering captain’s chairs in certain configurations. These seats can swivel and adjust, allowing for flexible interior layouts. The cushioning strikes a balance between softness and ergonomic support. Higher trims feature leather upholstery, ventilated seats, and even a massage function. Heated seats and a heated steering wheel are standard in colder climates. The interior is finished with eco-friendly and recycled materials, including sustainable fabrics and repurposed plastics.

The dashboard centers around two 12.3-inch displays positioned side by side, integrating the driver’s instrument cluster and the infotainment system. A 5-inch touchscreen between them provides quick access to essential functions. The system supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. While the multimedia interface is intuitive, the abundance of features may require time to fully master.

The EV9 includes a Bose sound system, USB-C charging ports in the second and third rows, and integrated entertainment options to keep rear passengers engaged. Adjustable LED ambient lighting creates a customizable, calming atmosphere.

The quiet operation of the electric motors enhances the overall driving experience. The cabin is well-insulated, effectively reducing external noise, even at higher speeds. The E-GMP platform’s low center of gravity, combined with a softer suspension setup, ensures a stable and comfortable ride. The quick-response steering provides good handling for a vehicle of its size, while regenerative braking extends range and smooths out the drive. Drivers can select different modes, including a "One-Pedal Driving" option that allows for driving primarily with the accelerator pedal.

Advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and enhanced autonomous driving features that reduce fatigue on longer trips. A 360-degree camera system and parking assist simplify maneuvering in tight spaces.

Most features come standard with the EV9, leaving additional options limited to aesthetic upgrades like wheel designs, paint colors, and accessories such as mud flaps.

The EV9 is priced around €90,000. While similarly equipped premium electric SUVs are slightly more expensive, whether Kia can truly rival their status remains to be seen.
