Hyundai RN24: A New Prototype Combining Rally Technology and High Performance

At this year’s N Day event, Hyundai unveiled its vision for high-performance electric vehicles by presenting the RN24 prototype, part of their "Rolling Lab" series of experimental test vehicles. RN24 focuses on three core elements: precise handling, track-ready performance, and an everyday sporty driving experience. Hyundai's N division aimed to combine a fun, accurate driving experience with electric vehicle technology.

The RN24 is equipped with a dual-stage 650-horsepower motor from the IONIQ 5 N, installed into a compact chassis, bringing the capability and control typically associated with Rally1 hybrid cars. This compact, lightweight, and agile design draws inspiration from the World Rally Championship (WRC), delivering a powerful electric motor paired with innovative technology, making the car suitable for daily use.

The RN24 prototype incorporates several technologies from Hyundai's rally cars. For instance, it includes the WRC Powertrain Drive Control Logic system, enabling the driver to control engine power, regenerative braking, and acceleration sensitivity using buttons on the steering wheel. Additionally, it features Rally Mode, an electronic torque distribution system for all four wheels, simulating the mechanical system used in Hyundai i20 N Rally1 rally cars.

The car’s design includes matte black, 19-inch forged wheels from the Elantra N and a spoiler inspired by the TCR models, enhancing aerodynamics and stability. The prototype is also equipped with a new e-Handbrake technology, enabling fast response times while maintaining low weight and a simplified system without physical brakes.

The RN24 is powered by the IONIQ 5 N’s 84 kWh battery, but with a 340 mm shorter wheelbase, it now fits a more compact B-segment body. The RN24 includes a safety cage and rally-specific dampers. Hyundai also added an optimized steering system for quicker response at high speeds, ensuring better handling. With its WRC-inspired design, the RN24 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3.4 seconds, with an estimated top speed of 240 km/h.

The RN24 is fitted with the N Active Sound+ system, which includes two additional speakers and resonators in the rear fenders to provide a high-quality sound experience. This external speaker system creates an engaging soundscape that enhances the vehicle's sporty character and delivers a unique driving experience.

Designed to test and develop future electric vehicle technology, the RN24 prototype allows Hyundai engineers to explore new ways to refine and elevate the sporty electric driving experience.
