High speed chase ends in crashes and arrests

Traffic police in Vilnius had a busy morning after officers clocked a speeding Volvo well above the limit. In a 70 km/h zone, the car was travelling at 128 km/h. Sirens and flashing lights failed to slow the driver down. Instead, he floored the accelerator and attempted to flee.

The chase through city traffic ended abruptly. The driver lost control, the Volvo left the road and ploughed into two cars parked at the roadside, a Škoda and a Citroën.

When the dust settled, the real reason for the escape attempt became clear. The 24 year old behind the wheel was heavily intoxicated, with a blood alcohol level of 1.55 promille, and had no valid driving licence. Checks on the two passengers added another twist. One of them turned out to be wanted by police and was taken straight into custody at the scene.

What began as a routine speeding stop quickly escalated into a string of offences that left multiple vehicles damaged and several people under arrest.
