Porsche-Powered Electric Speedboat Sets Record in Monaco
The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom, an electric luxury boat co-developed by Porsche, has set a new speed record at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. With an average pace of 49.84 knots—or 92.3 kilometers per hour—it delivered a performance that's all the more impressive given it’s a production model, not a one-off race-tuned prototype.
The boat, whose electric drivetrain is based on Porsche Macan Turbo technology, competed in the Open Sea category. On the outside, the 8.67-meter-long, 2.49-meter-wide aluminum-hulled vessel is every car enthusiast’s maritime daydream. Finished in a metallic oak green, it sports a classic silhouette and an interior that wouldn’t feel out of place with a steering wheel and dashboard.
The winning showcase in Monaco didn’t escape the attention of local dignitaries. Prince Albert II himself took a look and heard the story of how Porsche’s electric motor commands the waves. Still, the event had all the hallmarks of a brand flex. If the goal was to show that Porsche can build fast machines for the sea as well as the road, mission accomplished. Whether it marks a true shift in electric marine transport remains to be seen.
Technically speaking, the boat runs on an 800-volt system with up to 400 kilowatts of power, depending on the selected driving mode: Docking, Range, Sport, or Sport Plus. That gives it more than enough punch to reach speeds near 90 km/h. But the flip side is range. Depending on how it's used, the battery can drain quickly, and even the claimed 45-kilometer cruising range doesn’t exactly promise wide-open offshore freedom.
Frauscher builds the boat at its factory in Ohlsdorf, Austria. Porsche supplies the powertrain and battery modules, but final assembly and after-sales service remain in the boatmaker’s hands.
