In blinding clouds of snow, the driver of a UAZ Buhanka attempted an overtake and never saw the oncoming van. Its headlights were obscured by snow thrown up by a lorry ahead. The impact was brutal. One person died, five others were taken to hospital.
Looking at what remained of the UAZ after the crash, it is hard to comprehend how anyone survived at all.
The accident laid bare the realities of the Buhanka’s safety. Frame by frame footage of the moment of impact tells a grim story. The boxy body appears to offer virtually no protection.
