Not long ago, “Made in China” meant cheap sneakers and glossy plastic trinkets. Today, the label tells a different story. China is no longer the factory floor of the world but a fast-moving tech powerhouse with global ambitions.

Joey Chan, head of BYD’s Hong Kong division, put it plainly in an interview with Chinese outlet Autohome: the world’s perception of Chinese goods is shifting. The new motto is not just “Made in China” but “Smart Made in China.”

Chan emphasized that the electric vehicle revolution has been the driving force behind this transformation. China’s new generation of automakers has proven that engineering excellence, quality and innovation are not bound by geography. In Hong Kong, where left-hand traffic meets fierce global competition, cars made in China are increasingly seen as serious contenders.

BYD has even built its own shipping fleet to export vehicles worldwide. Each new ship breaks records for capacity, underscoring the scale of the company’s vision. At home, BYD plays hardball with prices to solidify its domestic position. Abroad, it sells at full market value, proving its products can hold their own not just through discounts, but through quality and confidence.
