Yangwang U9: The Supercar That Races Without a Driver
Chinese automaker BYD has once again pushed the boundaries of autonomous driving technology, proving that self-driving capabilities aren’t limited to city streets and highways—they can take on the race track as well. Their latest electric supercar, the Yangwang U9, equipped with the advanced God’s Eye A autopilot system, was unleashed on the Zhuzhou International Circuit, completing laps without a driver, both in broad daylight and under the cover of night.
Cutting-Edge Autonomous Technology
At the heart of the Yangwang U9’s self-driving system are three LiDAR sensors, 11 cameras, five millimeter-wave radars, and 11 ultrasonic sensors, all orchestrated by two Nvidia Orin X chips with a combined processing power of 600 TOPS (trillion operations per second). To put that into perspective, this is twice as powerful as the AI processor in a Sony PlayStation 5 Pro.
BYD plans to integrate God’s Eye technology across its entire lineup, though God’s Eye A, the most advanced version, will be reserved exclusively for Yangwang models. Meanwhile, God’s Eye B and God’s Eye C will be available in BYD and Denza vehicles, with the latter offering only highway-level automation.
Performance That Rivals the Best
While the self-driving capabilities of the Yangwang U9 are undeniably impressive, its performance figures are equally jaw-dropping. The car is powered by four electric motors, producing a staggering 1,306 horsepower and 1,680 Nm of torque. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds, placing it in the same league as the Tesla Model S Plaid. In recent testing, the U9 hit a confirmed top speed of 391.94 km/h, making it one of the fastest electric cars ever built.
Next-Level Suspension System
The active suspension on the Yangwang U9 is another standout feature. It eliminates body roll and nosedive, ensuring an ultra-stable ride. More impressively, it can instantly raise any individual wheel by 50 mm, improving handling in extreme conditions, smoothing out road imperfections, and enhancing aerodynamics at high speeds.
A Glimpse into the Future of Performance Cars
BYD’s Yangwang U9 is redefining what it means to be a high-performance electric supercar, blending mind-bending speed with autonomous intelligence. As BYD continues to expand its technological reach, it’s clear that the future of performance driving may not require a driver at all.
