BMW Speedtop: The Wagon You’ll Never Own

If you thought the world had no room left for outrageously priced, two-seater wagons, BMW has a sharply tailored rebuttal: meet the Speedtop, a car as practical as a Louis Vuitton suitcase on a mountain trail and as exclusive as champagne aboard the International Space Station.

Unveiled at Villa d’Este—the hallowed ground for cars with more heritage than some European nations—the Speedtop redefines opulence with a wink. Based on the M8 Competition platform, BMW ditched the back seats in favor of bespoke luggage compartments, complete with leather straps that look straight out of a 1930s train porter’s arsenal.

Initially paraded as a concept, the Speedtop is now slated for a hyper-limited production run: just 70 units. Price? A cool half a million euros, give or take. And yes, it comes with custom Schedoni travel bags—because of course it does.

This exquisite shooting brake follows last year’s Skytop, BMW’s half-convertible, half-enigma creation. Evidently, the Bavarians have developed a taste for boutique car-making and intend to serve something equally exotic each year. Under the hood? The same thunderous V8 as the M8.

So, while BMW M once stood for motorsport pedigree, it’s now becoming catnip for collectors. The future may bring one-off delights with every calendar turn—but unless your wallet matches your desire, the Speedtop will remain exactly where it started: out of reach.
