Chinese ambition meets reality as Zeekr recalls thousands of EVs over battery defects

One of China’s brightest automotive stars just hit a hard stop. Zeekr, the luxury electric marque backed by Geely, admitted that rapid growth and bold promises do not always deliver flawless quality. The company announced a large scale recall affecting more than 38,000 examples of its flagship Zeekr 001. The official reason was a manufacturing defect in battery cells that, in the worst case, could even lead to a fire.

The issue centres on the Zeekr 001 WE version equipped with an 86 kWh battery pack. Vehicles built between July 2021 and March 2024 turned out to be technically vulnerable due to defective cells supplied by Sunwoda. Documents submitted to China’s market regulator revealed that inconsistent quality in internal battery components caused rising electrical resistance over time, slowing charging speeds and creating a risk of thermal instability.

What drew wider attention was not only the technical fault but the unusually public dispute between manufacturer and supplier. Vremt, the Geely subsidiary responsible for assembling the battery packs, accused Sunwoda of breaching contractual obligations and demanded compensation running into hundreds of millions of dollars. Zeekr initially tried to handle the issue quietly through a low key winter service campaign, but the seriousness of the defect and regulatory pressure eventually forced a formal recall.

Despite the setback, Zeekr showed little sign of losing confidence in its broader strategy. The company stressed that newer models, including European market versions with 100 kWh batteries, rely on cells from a different supplier and remain unaffected. At home, Zeekr moved quickly to promote its newly developed in house “golden battery”, intended to reduce reliance on external suppliers with questionable quality control.

From March, owners will be invited in for free battery replacements or additional software and hardware checks. While Zeekr framed the recall as evidence of customer care, the episode inevitably raises a wider question. How many similar production deviations might still be hiding beneath the glossy surface of China’s fast expanding electric car industry.

From a professional standpoint, this is a sobering lesson. Even the most ambitious brands must accept that advanced technology is only as strong as its weakest link.
