Xpeng G6: China’s New Electronic Offensive Rolls Into Europe

Xpeng calls its G6 “ultra-intelligent” and claims it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 12 minutes. In Europe, where charging speed has become the electric car’s most marketable weapon, that kind of number sounds like a declaration of war.

Chinese automaker Xpeng, intent on becoming a global leader in AI-driven mobility, is bringing its updated G6 to Europe with confidence verging on bravado. Built on an 800-volt architecture, powered by an 80.8 kWh LFP battery pack and capable of up to 451 kW charging, the G6 is positioned to challenge Tesla and Hyundai’s Ioniq range head-on. The manufacturer promises that the battery can reach 80 percent in just 12 minutes, assuming perfect conditions of charger, temperature and grid supply. In reality, Europe still has very few stations capable of sustaining 450 kW, so much of that boast remains theoretical for now.

The G6 continues to ride on Xpeng’s SEPA 2.0 platform, now upgraded with LFP chemistry in place of the earlier NMC cells. The switch brings cost and safety advantages at the expense of some energy density. WLTP figures quote 535 kilometres combined or up to 689 kilometres in urban use — respectable numbers, though not revolutionary. It enters one of Europe’s most competitive arenas, the mid-size electric SUV segment, where it must face the Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Polestar 4 and several German contenders.

Xpeng’s marketing materials speak of a “bulletproof battery” capable of withstanding 1,000 degrees Celsius and 80 tonnes of lateral pressure — impressive if taken literally, but more spectacle than substance in everyday use. The same tone applies to claims of “20,000 optimisation cycles” for the chassis, said to improve handling and vibration isolation.

Inside, the G6 finally meets European expectations. A new 15.6-inch UHD central display, a 10.25-inch driver cluster, heated and ventilated massage seats and a 12-step reclining rear bench all contribute to a polished cabin. It sounds luxurious, yet experience with Asian EVs suggests software remains the Achilles’ heel — translation inconsistencies, patchy connectivity and irregular over-the-air updates are still common weak points.

Design-wise, the G6 takes a clean, Scandinavian-inspired approach. The full-width Starlight LED light bar, body-coloured wheel arches and distinctive ducktail spoiler give it presence without excess. The Black Edition takes a darker turn, with blacked-out logos, wheels and brake calipers, an aesthetic choice rather than a technical one.
