xAI Unveils Next-Generation AI Model Grok 3
Elon Musk’s company xAI has introduced Grok 3, its latest AI model capable of analyzing images, solving complex mathematical problems, and integrating with the social media platform X. According to benchmark tests, Grok 3 surpasses OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini in various performance metrics. The new version incorporates specialized models for logical reasoning and fact verification, along with a DeepSearch feature designed for in-depth information analysis. A voice mode is also expected to be released soon. Initially, Grok 3 is available exclusively to X Premium+ subscribers.
Architecture and Features
Grok 3 is not a single model but rather a family of AI models, including Grok 3 mini, a smaller version that prioritizes speed over accuracy. While not all of Grok 3’s features are fully operational yet, gradual deployment is already underway, with some functionalities still in beta testing.
To train the new model, xAI utilized a high-performance data center in Memphis, featuring approximately 200,000 GPUs—a tenfold increase in computing power compared to the infrastructure used for training Grok 2. Additionally, Grok 3 has been trained on a significantly broader dataset, which is rumored to include legal documents.
Performance evaluations suggest that Grok 3 outperforms GPT-4o in several benchmarks, including AIME (advanced mathematical problems) and GPQA (PhD-level physics, biology, and chemistry questions). Early testing has also shown Grok 3 to be competitive in Chatbot Arena, a crowdsourced platform where AI models compete, and users vote for the best responses.
Grok 3 consists of two specialized reasoning models:
Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning, designed to enhance logical processing and fact verification, thereby reducing errors in responses.
Users can switch between "Think" mode for general queries and "Big Brain" mode for more complex tasks. xAI recommends these models for math, science, and programming-related queries.
Additionally, Grok 3 features DeepSearch, a tool similar to OpenAI’s Deep Research, which analyzes online information, including content from X, and provides summarized insights.
Subscription Plans and Availability
For now, Grok 3 is available exclusively to X Premium+ subscribers for $50 per month. A SuperGrok subscription is also expected, priced at $30 per month or $300 per year, offering advanced data analysis, an enhanced DeepSearch feature, and unlimited image generation.
Musk has announced that a voice mode will be introduced within a week, and in the coming weeks, Grok 3 and DeepSearch will become available via xAI’s enterprise API. Additionally, xAI plans to open-source Grok 2 in the near future once Grok 3 reaches full stability.
Political Neutrality and Past Controversies
Two years ago, Musk introduced Grok AI as a bold, unfiltered AI designed to tackle controversial topics. Earlier versions of Grok and Grok 2 were known for their edgy language, though they avoided political discussions. A past study indicated that Grok AI leaned toward liberal viewpoints, which Musk attributed to bias in its training data. He promised to make future iterations more politically neutral, though it remains unclear whether Grok 3 has successfully achieved this balance.
