Volvo Revives the XC70 Name with a Plug-In Hybrid SUV Promising up to 1200 km Range
The new XC70 rides on Volvo’s state-of-the-art SMA (Super Modular Architecture) platform, developed specifically for long-range plug-in hybrids. At the top end, the powertrain delivers 462 horsepower and offers up to 200 kilometers of electric-only driving. Combined range is quoted at up to 1200 kilometers, placing it among the most efficient models in its class.
In China, the entry-level version comes with a 318-horsepower hybrid setup, good for 0–100 km/h in 8 seconds. The more powerful variant cuts that to 5.3 seconds and pairs with a 39.6 kWh battery for extended electric driving. A smaller 21.2 kWh option delivers up to 116 kilometers of zero-emission range.
Dimensionally, the XC70 slots below the XC90, measuring 4,815 mm in length with a 2,895 mm wheelbase. Luggage capacity spans from 408 to 1,456 liters depending on seat configuration. The design is minimalist and contemporary, highlighted by a clean grille-less front, frameless doors with flush handles, and Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED running lights. Buyers can choose 19- or 20-inch wheels.
Inside, the cabin emphasizes clarity and functionality, led by a 15.4-inch central display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an optional head-up display. Materials include wood trim, while modern conveniences such as wireless charging and AI-based voice control are standard. Audio comes courtesy of Harman Kardon.
In China, pricing starts at 299,900 yuan (around €34,000), signaling that Volvo intends to position the XC70 as a broadly accessible model rather than a market-exclusive. Full technical specifications and trim levels will be disclosed in September when the car reaches Chinese showrooms, with details of its European debut still to be announced.
