Volvo Rolls Out Reinforced FL 4x4: A Mid-Sized Truck Built for Hard Ground

When the asphalt ends and the terrain turns hostile, Volvo believes its customers should not have to compromise. The Swedish manufacturer is expanding its mid-range truck line-up with a model designed to go where ordinary haulers falter and where crisis often begins.

Unveiled as the upgraded Volvo FL 4x4, the truck is tailored for environments far removed from orderly city grids. Built on the compact, agile FL platform, the new variant gains permanent all-wheel drive and heavy-duty axles, turning it into a tool fit for construction sites, emergency services, and even military operators.

Volvo makes no secret of why it exists. Demand has been mounting among customers who must deliver and operate in areas inaccessible to conventional commercial vehicles. In the words of the company’s release, it is “a workhorse with a clear purpose,” a phrase that translates into increased ground clearance, unambiguous toughness, and the ability to bolt on extras ranging from winches and bull bars to underbody guards for the transfer case.

The cabin choice is straightforward: a two-seater day cab or a crew cab with room for six. Power comes exclusively from Volvo’s proven 8-litre diesel, a pragmatic decision in a segment where viable alternatives remain scarce. Few powertrains today can haul, endure, and survive far beyond the tarmac.

Orders for the reinforced FL 4x4 open this autumn, with production slated to begin in November 2025.
