Volkswagen reveals its first electric GTI
Volkswagen has presented the ID. Polo GTI, the first fully electric GTI model in the brand’s history. The electric hot hatch produces 166 kW, equal to 226 bhp, keeps front wheel drive, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and is expected to go on sale in Germany this autumn at under €39,000.
The electric GTI keeps front wheel drive
Volkswagen is putting the GTI badge on a fully electric model for the first time. The ID. Polo GTI uses the MEB+ platform, drives the front wheels and develops 166 kW and 290 Nm of torque. Top speed stands at 175 km/h.
The company stresses that the car keeps the classic GTI formula: a compact body, front wheel drive and a sharper chassis set up. Standard equipment includes an electronically controlled front differential lock, adaptive DCC suspension, progressive steering, 19 inch wheels and IQ.LIGHT matrix LED headlights.
The battery promises up to 424 kilometres of range
The ID. Polo GTI gets a 52 kWh usable NMC battery. According to Volkswagen’s preliminary WLTP estimate, range should reach up to 424 kilometres. On a rapid DC charger, the car supports up to 105 kW, with a 10 to 80 per cent charge taking around 24 minutes.
The GTI stands apart from the regular ID. Polo with a more aggressive look, red design details, sports seats and steering wheel paddles that let the driver adjust energy recuperation. Volkswagen also points to a dedicated GTI driving mode, which sharpens the motor, steering and chassis settings.
Volkswagen returns to familiar names
The ID. Polo grew out of the earlier ID.2 project, but Volkswagen decided to bring back model names that customers already know for its electric cars. The regular ID. Polo should reach the European market in 2026, with the entry level version priced below €25,000.
The GTI version sits clearly above it. Volkswagen still describes the ID. Polo GTI as a pre production concept rather than the final showroom model, but the published technical figures and pricing suggest a car already very close to series production.
Analysis: GTI changes, but it does not disappear
The ID. Polo GTI is a symbolic model for Volkswagen. GTI no longer automatically means a petrol engine and a gearbox. It now means a sportier set up, a separate design language and stronger performance in a compact car.
The risk is just as obvious. Some GTI buyers still connect the badge with engine noise and mechanical feel. Volkswagen, though, wants to show that an electric hot hatch does not have to be only about an acceleration figure. Front wheel drive, a differential lock and proper chassis tuning now have to prove that the GTI identity can survive without a combustion engine.
