Volkswagen previews Golf R 24H prototype for Nürburgring 24 hour race
Volkswagen R unveiled the Golf R 24H concept car, offering the first glimpse of the machine it plans to take to the Nürburgring 24 hour race in 2027. The project is being developed with Max Kruse Racing and marks the 25th anniversary of Volkswagen R.
Based on the current Golf R, the new car is an all wheel drive racing prototype built to cope with the particular punishment of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Volkswagen has not released technical details yet, but it makes one thing clear. The Golf R 24H is not a showroom model. It is an early preview of a 2027 race car.
Visually, it moves a long way from the standard Golf R. The body is wider, the front splitter is far more aggressive and the rear gains a large diffuser and a substantial wing. This is not a design pack with a louder voice. It is a Golf R shaped for circuit work.
Max Kruse Racing joins the programme
Volkswagen is developing the race programme with Max Kruse Racing. Team cofounder Benjamin Leuchter leads the project and also plays a role in tuning Volkswagen’s sportier production models. According to Volkswagen, the Nürburgring 24 hour race will give the R brand a chance to prove itself in proper competition conditions.
The Golf R 24H is not, for now, a special edition buyers can order. It is a statement car. Volkswagen is using the Nürburgring as test laboratory, marketing stage and identity builder for the R brand all at once. Cynical, perhaps, but entirely logical.
The timing matters too. In 2027, Volkswagen will mark 25 years since the debut of the Golf R32, the car that started the Volkswagen R story.
Volkswagen still keeps the engine, output and racing class under wraps, but the message is already clear enough. The Golf R needs to remain more than a quick hatchback. It needs to be seen again as a car whose technical reputation was earned on the track, not merely polished in a brochure.
