A study by the UK used car marketplace CarGurus compared the average prices of second-hand electric vehicles (EVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to identify the best savings opportunities. The findings reveal that EVs are, on average, 10% (£2,560) cheaper than their ICE equivalents.

The 2021 Mazda MX-30 showed the greatest price difference, costing 28% less than the same-year Mazda CX-30 (£12,180 vs. £16,960). Similarly, the 2024 Mazda MX-30 was 24% cheaper than its ICE counterpart (£19,580 vs. £25,743).

The study indicates that three- to four-year-old EVs offer the best value compared to ICE models of the same age. Additionally, used EVs had 18% lower mileage on average (by about 3,252 miles) than comparable ICE vehicles.

The largest mileage gap was observed between the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Golf, with the electric version having 44% lower mileage (2,860 vs. 5,151 miles). Similarly, the 2024 Mazda MX-30’s mileage was 39% lower than the CX-30’s (1,794 vs. 2,921 miles), and the 2023 Škoda Enyaq’s mileage was 28% lower than that of the same-year Kodiaq (9,219 vs. 12,794 miles).

These findings suggest that used electric cars could be a more cost-effective choice, offering lower prices and reduced mileage compared to equivalent ICE models.
