Lexus Plots Its Own Supra, Promising a Sleeker, More Sophisticated Twin

The Toyota Supra isn’t going anywhere - in fact, it’s bringing company. And not just any company, but Lexus, which appears poised for a bold re-entry into the world of high-performance coupes. If the latest rumors out of Japan hold true, we may soon see a more luxurious, refined counterpart to the Supra that shares much of its DNA under the skin.

The current GR Supra, recently refreshed, will carry on quietly until 2026. But whispers from Japan suggest its next-generation successor won’t take the stage alone. Lexus is reportedly preparing a model that will replace the long-discontinued RC and usher the aging LC into retirement.

This won’t be a simple rebadge job. Lexus is expected to deliver a low-slung 2+2 coupe inspired by its 2021 Electrified Sport Concept, blending futuristic aesthetics with the brand’s hallmark opulence. Expect the Lexus variant to be sleeker, more premium, and certainly more expensive.

Under the hood, things get especially intriguing. While Toyota remains tight-lipped, it’s clear the BMW collaboration that birthed the current Supra is history. The upcoming Supra will ride on Toyota’s own architecture, highlighted by a two-liter turbocharged engine delivering 400 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, augmented by an electric motor for added punch and a lighter environmental footprint.

Both the new Supra and its Lexus sibling will feature automatic transmissions, with either eight or nine speeds on offer. Environmental regulations may temper some of the raw thrill, but compromise is part of the modern sports car equation.

There’s also a wildcard. Some reports suggest a potential partnership with Mazda, which could bring a newly developed inline-six engine destined for the RX-7’s successor into the Supra mix.

Production timelines remain unconfirmed, but 2026 or 2027 seem the most plausible bets. Should Lexus step in, it’s expected to do so right on the heels of Supra’s next debut.
