Toyota Highlander steps into the electric age Toyota
Toyota returned to its familiar teaser playbook, releasing just enough information about the next generation Toyota Highlander to stir genuine confusion. Long known as the safe, conservative choice for family buyers, the Highlander now appears poised for a far more radical reinvention. The hints suggest Toyota is ready to rewrite the identity of one of its most popular SUVs and push it straight into the electric era.
Recent images and leaks point to a model expected to debut as a 2027 model year vehicle, proudly wearing BEV and AWD badges. If that proves accurate, the familiar combustion engines and even traditional hybrid systems could be left behind. The plan looks bold but straightforward, reposition the Highlander as a fully electric, three row SUV aimed squarely at rivals such as the Kia EV9 and the Hyundai Ioniq 9.
That strategic shift also explains the recent rise of the larger Grand Highlander. While the bigger sibling continues to serve buyers who prefer petrol and hybrid powertrains, the standard Highlander would evolve into a technological flagship. Early glimpses of the interior suggest a brighter, more open cabin dominated by a large panoramic roof and a fully digital dashboard. The atmosphere feels closer to a modern Toyota RAV4 than to the slightly clumsy interior the Highlander carried for years.
For a brand that long treated full electric cars with caution and consistently promoted hybrids as the sensible answer, turning the Highlander into a BEV sends a clear signal. Even in Japan, the message seems to have landed. In this segment, surviving without full electrification is no longer an option.
Whether an all wheel drive electric Highlander can preserve its reputation as an unbreakable family companion or simply blend into the growing crowd of screen heavy electric crossovers remains to be seen. The official unveiling should provide answers soon enough. What already feels certain is that this will not be the Highlander buyers grew up with.
