Tesla gears up for the autonomous taxi race: CyberCab enters production next spring

A self-driving, two-seater electric taxi that promises a ride “almost alive”, at least according to Elon Musk.

Tesla’s founder and CEO has confirmed that production of the fully autonomous CyberCab will begin in the second quarter of 2026. Designed for two passengers, the new electric vehicle abandons traditional controls altogether: no steering wheel, no pedals, just artificial intelligence and silence.

Musk described the CyberCab as a machine that “feels alive”, referring to the sophistication of Tesla’s in-house AI system. First shown last year, the model resembles a compact blend of the Model 3 and Model Y, but with only two upward-opening doors. Visibility is handled entirely by cameras, with no rear window or side mirrors in sight.

Inside, passengers are greeted by a minimalist cabin with a central touchscreen, wide seat console, and cup holders. The luggage compartment is separated by a partition, while the interior follows Tesla’s familiar clean, almost clinical aesthetic.

Technical specifications remain under wraps, but early estimates suggest a price of around $30,000 (€28,000). The CyberCab will run on Tesla’s most advanced autonomous platform yet, capable of operating without human intervention in any driving scenario, according to Musk.

At the same time, Tesla plans to transition its RoboTaxi service in Austin, Texas, to a fully driverless model. The company insists, however, that expansion will be measured rather than rushed — a rare hint of caution from a brand more accustomed to acceleration.
