Škoda pays tribute to its 1960s coupé icon
Retro charm meets sliding doors in a concept that fuses old-school elegance with modern design flair.
Czech carmaker Škoda has unveiled a new design study inspired by the legendary 1960s 1000 MBX coupé — but with a decidedly futuristic twist. Designers Antti Savio and David Stingl have reimagined the classic as a sleek, sedan-like electric crossover, distinguished by its sliding doors. The result looks as if nostalgia and the future decided to go on holiday together.
Only around 2,500 examples of the original 1000 MBX were ever built. The new interpretation brings that rarity into the world of modern active lifestyles. The designers note that the MBX was never meant to be a sports car but rather an elegant, practical and quietly stylish coupé. That same character guided the concept’s creation, with friendly, understated looks and none of the aggression typical of today’s SUVs.
The 1960s influence shows through in the round headlights, the distinctive window line, and the rear pillars shaped to echo the old car’s window frame design. The concept dispenses with a traditional rear window in favour of a rear-view camera, improving practicality and design freedom. Sliding doors make entry and loading easier, in keeping with the vehicle’s role as a relaxed adventure companion.
Inside, the designers took even greater creative liberty. The dashboard is a single glass panel projecting instruments and media, while the flat floor and absence of a centre console create a light, open cabin. The rear seat can be flipped up to extend the luggage area when needed.
Škoda has yet to share any technical details, though the concept was envisioned as a fully electric SUV. Adjustable air suspension would allow drivers to change the ride height for different driving styles or easier loading.
It may never reach production, but as a playground for ideas and a nod to Škoda’s design heritage, the project hits exactly the right note.
