A serious traffic accident brought one of Latvia’s main arterial roads to a standstill after a head on collision between a scheduled passenger bus and a heavy goods vehicle.

The crash occurred on the A9 highway linking Riga and Liepāja, near the Apšupe junction on the stretch between the Kalnciems bridge and Apshupe. The A9 serves as a vital transport corridor across western Latvia, carrying both commuter traffic and freight bound for the Baltic coast.

Head on impact closes both carriageways

According to initial reports, the bus and lorry collided head on. The force of the impact sent the truck onto its side, blocking the roadway entirely in both directions. Authorities diverted traffic onto secondary roads while emergency services secured the scene.

Several ambulance crews and rescue units responded. Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free people trapped inside the vehicles, indicating the severity of the collision.

Local media and eyewitnesses confirmed that ambulances transported multiple casualties from the scene. Officials have not yet released the exact number of injured or details regarding their condition.
