The new Russian Volga arrived, conquered… and turned out to be made in China

It seems Russia’s carmakers have stopped even pretending. Footage circulating online shows the long-awaited new Volga — hailed as a proud symbol of the reborn domestic auto industry — on its way to a presentation in Moscow. Only one problem: the “new” Volga turned out to be a Chinese Geely Atlas with shiny Volga badges stuck on the bonnet.
The result was about as home-grown as a souvenir from AliExpress. The great engineering achievement apparently consisted of peeling off one logo, slapping on another, and perhaps tweaking a few details in the hope no one would notice.
The car was supposed to represent national pride and prove that Russia could build everything on its own. Instead, it once again proved that China could do it better — or at least sooner. When journalists reached out to the Nizhny Novgorod factory for comment, they were met with silence. The only sound inside, one imagines, was someone asking, “Shall we stick the badge on the right or the left?”
