Industrial robots stopped being a novelty long ago. Most major electronics firms are now busy tinkering with humanoid prototypes meant to lend us a hand in everyday life. Russia, too, wants a slice of that future—mainly because soon they might need someone else to send to the front in Ukraine.
Yesterday the country staged a grand presentation of its home-grown robot. The event unfolded in unmistakably Russian fashion and left observers wondering whether the nation can actually build anything functional, or if its real expertise still lies in smashing, looting, and destroying.
It wasn’t their first attempt at automated systems. There were earlier stunts with parcel drones that famously crashed into walls or dropped out of the sky, and the exhibition robot that once “spoke” with Putin but later turned out to have a man sitting inside it. The last genuinely working robot seen in Russia may well have been the one in the early-1980s animated film The Secret of the Third Planet.
