Porsche unveils open top GT3 flagship with naturally aspirated engine and manual gearbox

Porsche has revealed the new 911 GT3 S/C, a model that combines a naturally aspirated flat six, a six speed manual gearbox and a folding soft top. It is the first GT3 of its kind in the brand’s history.

The car marks a significant expansion of the GT3 line. This new version uses a 4.0 litre naturally aspirated six cylinder boxer engine producing 510 hp.

Power goes to the rear wheels through a six speed manual transmission. Porsche says the car was conceived as a driver’s machine, with immediate feedback, high revs and the purest mechanical experience possible at its core.

The GT3 S/C uses a fully automatic soft top and a two seat body. According to the company, engineers weighed every detail of the development process against one goal, preserving the precision and lightness that define a GT3 even in an open top format.

Its most obvious rivals include the Ferrari 296 GTS, Maserati MC20 Cielo and Aston Martin Vantage Roadster, yet none of them lines up neatly with Porsche’s new arrival. The Ferrari 296 GTS uses a plug in hybrid twin turbo V6. The Maserati MC20 Cielo also relies on a twin turbo V6 and an automatic gearbox. The Aston Martin Vantage Roadster goes its own way with a twin turbo V8. That leaves Porsche with a point of difference that goes well beyond the missing roof. In this price bracket, a naturally aspirated engine paired with a manual gearbox is now close to an endangered species.

The new model makes clear that Porsche wants to broaden the reach of its GT division for buyers who care not only about the final lap time, but also about the emotional side of driving. Stuttgart is placing the GT3 S/C in a narrow but enticing niche, where the classic sports car recipe meets the appeal of open air motoring. Given the engineering choices made by its rivals, Porsche is really selling something rarer than outright performance. It is selling an analogue experience at a time when most competitors are heading for turbocharging, hybrid systems and automatic transmissions. That feels less like another spin off and more like a deliberate act of defiance.
