Polestar 2 set to become a sports saloon, aims squarely at the BMW 3 Series

Polestar is preparing a major rethink of the Polestar 2. The slightly crossover like look of the current model will disappear, replaced by the shape of a classic sports saloon. The next generation Polestar 2 is expected to arrive in 2027 and will take direct aim at the BMW 3 Series.

The new design was led by Polestar’s head of design, Philipp Römers. According to him, the brand deliberately pushed the proportions towards a lower and more dynamic silhouette.

The current Polestar 2 sits somewhere between a hatchback and a crossover, with a stance that leans slightly towards SUV territory. The next generation drops that ambiguity and adopts a clear saloon form.

The shift is not only about aesthetics. A lower, sleeker body should improve both handling and efficiency. In the world of electric cars, better aerodynamics often translates directly into extra kilometres of driving range.

Bigger body, more interior space

The new Polestar 2 will also grow in size. The overall length is expected to increase by around 100 millimetres, reaching roughly 4700 millimetres.

That places the car firmly in the territory of traditional executive saloons such as the BMW 3 Series, Tesla Model 3 and Mercedes Benz C Class.

The added size should also solve one of the main criticisms aimed at the current Polestar 2. Rear seat space has always been tight, particularly for taller passengers. A longer wheelbase and a larger cabin should finally address that limitation.

New platform from the Geely group

Technically, the next generation model will rely on a new universal architecture developed within the Geely group. The same platform will underpin several brands in the group, including Volvo and Lotus.

Using a shared electric architecture allows manufacturers to spread development costs across multiple models while keeping room for different driving characters and brand identities.

Target price around €50,000

Early estimates suggest the new Polestar 2 will start at roughly €50,000. That would position it directly against premium electric saloons in the same segment.

By the time it arrives in 2027, the fight for the compact executive electric market will be even more intense. Tesla, BMW, Mercedes and several Chinese manufacturers are all pushing hard into the space. Polestar’s answer appears simple enough, build a sharper, lower saloon and take the fight straight to the heart of the segment.
