Pirelli Smart Tyre Wins Global Automotive Technology of the Year Award
Born in Milan and now celebrated worldwide, the Pirelli CyberTM Tyre has been named Innovative V2X Technology of the Year at the AutoTech Breakthrough Awards 2025. More than just a tyre, it’s a rolling data centre that talks directly to the vehicle’s electronics, turning every corner, brake, and burst of acceleration into a smarter, more responsive experience.
Unlike traditional systems that rely on sensors within the car, the CyberTM Tyre gathers information from inside the tyre itself. Embedded sensors constantly monitor pressure, temperature, wear and load. The data is transmitted in real time to the vehicle’s control unit, where Pirelli’s proprietary algorithms process it instantly. The result is sharper traction control, more precise braking, and stability systems that react faster and more intuitively than ever before.
Developed in collaboration with Bosch Engineering, the system integrates directly into a car’s electronic architecture. It’s not an accessory, but a fully functional part of the vehicle’s nervous system.
From Tyre to Network Node
Pirelli’s technology goes beyond communication between driver and car. The CyberTM Tyre enables V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) and V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure) connectivity, sharing real-time information with other vehicles and road systems. In practice, that means alerts about potholes, icy surfaces or traffic congestion can flow between cars and the road network, laying the groundwork for genuinely “talking roads.”
From Supercars to the Everyday Drive
The smart tyre is already fitted to several luxury models, with Aston Martin among the first manufacturers to confirm its use in upcoming cars. Pirelli plans to expand the technology to a wider market, suggesting that intelligent tyres may soon become as common as ABS or traction control once were.
