OMODA unveiled the new OMODA 4 at the Beijing motor show. The compact C-segment SUV will reach the market in the first quarter of 2027, with both an SHS hybrid and a fully electric version in the line-up. For the brand, this is more than just one new model: the OMODA 4 is meant to help Chery move in Europe from a price-led challenger to a credible mainstream player.

OMODA 4 is no longer merely a youth-oriented design project
Brand describes the new model as a cyber-mecha style car centred on a digital cabin, connected services and appeal to younger buyers. That means OMODA is not building the model solely around the rationality of a classic SUV, but also around a strong visual identity and a technological image.

The OMODA 4 is 4,420 mm long, 1,870 mm wide and 1,570 mm high, which places it at the lower end of the compact C-SUV class by size: in length it sits essentially alongside the Nissan Qashqai, but it is lower and wider. The manufacturer names the platform as T1X and the drivetrain layout as front-wheel drive.

Hybrid and electric versions provide two different purchase arguments
OMODA confirms that the model will be offered with the SHS, or Super Hybrid System, hybrid. At the heart of that system are a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, the 1.5T DHE, and a 1.83 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Initial system output is 165 kW, or 224 hp, and torque is 295 Nm. These figures are still awaiting homologation, so they should be treated as the manufacturer's preliminary data.

According to the press material, the fully electric OMODA 4 uses a 61.1 kWh battery and a 155 kW, or 211 hp, electric motor. The manufacturer promises a combined range of more than 400 km, but has not yet disclosed the final homologation standard, charging power or charging time.

Electric rivals set the bar high
The closest rivals to the OMODA 4 electric version are already arriving on the market with clearly defined technical packages. The Kia EV3 offers a 58.3 or 81.4 kWh battery, a 150 kW electric motor and up to 375 miles, or around 604 km, of combined range on the WLTP cycle. Depending on version, the car is 4,300 to 4,310 mm long, so the Kia is shorter than the OMODA 4, but the large-battery version sets a very strong benchmark for range.

The Hyundai Kona Electric offers a 65.4 kWh battery in its long-range version and up to 514 km of WLTP range. According to Hyundai's official data, 10 to 80% charging on a 101 kW DC charger takes 41 minutes. That means the OMODA 4 will have to convince buyers not only on price, but also with charging-speed and energy-consumption data.

Qashqai, C-HR and MG ZS are waiting among the hybrids
For the hybrid version, the most important rivals are the Nissan Qashqai e-POWER, Toyota C-HR and MG ZS Hybrid+. The Nissan Qashqai measures 4,425 mm in length, and Nissan lists WLTP fuel consumption for the latest e-POWER system at 4.5 l/100 km and CO2 emissions at 102 g/km.

The Toyota C-HR is slightly shorter than the OMODA 4: according to Toyota Estonia technical data, the model is 4,362 mm long. The base 1.8-litre hybrid delivers a system output of 103 kW and WLTP fuel consumption falls in the 4.7 to 4.9 l/100 km range.

European strategy: price must be backed by trust
The OMODA 4 arrives at a time when Chery is expanding its presence in Europe. According to Reuters, Chery is working on broadening its European model line-up, and OMODA and JAECOO are driving the group's growth in the European market. The same source notes that Chery assembles cars in Europe in Spain at a former Nissan plant and is also seeking new production opportunities.

That backdrop makes the OMODA 4 more significant than a standard model launch. If Chery can localise production in Europe, that would reduce tariff, supply-chain and political risk. At the same time, the current material does not confirm that the OMODA 4 will come specifically from the Spanish factory. Reuters previously wrote that the Barcelona plant's production plan initially concerns the OMODA 5 and later the JAECOO 7.
