Nissan’s plug-in hybrid Terrano shows the Japanese brand’s new China plan
At the Beijing motor show, Nissan unveiled the Terrano PHEV Concept, reviving an SUV name associated in many markets with the Pathfinder and the classic off-roader. The production model will be shown publicly within a year, and Nissan is aiming it not only at China but also at selected export markets, specifically the regions where the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 still holds a very strong position.
Nissan chose the right stage for the Terrano’s return. Auto China is not merely a local motor show, but the nerve centre of the global market for electrified cars. In Beijing, Nissan simultaneously presented two plug-in hybrid SUV concepts: the Urban SUV PHEV, aimed at younger urban customers, and the Terrano PHEV Concept, with a significantly more forceful message. Production versions of both are expected to debut within a year.
Of the two, the Terrano is the more strategically interesting. Nissan positions the model as an SUV that must combine off-road heritage, everyday usability and plug-in hybrid technology. The design speaks the same language: a boxy body, short overhangs, high ground clearance, the robust architecture of the bumpers, auxiliary lights, a roof setup with a ladder, and a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate deliberately create the image of an old-school body-on-frame off-roader.
Technical details remain fairly unclear for now. Nissan confirmed a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but did not disclose details of the platform, battery, transmission or four-wheel-drive system. The logic nevertheless points to the Dongfeng-Nissan Frontier Pro PHEV, whose Chinese version uses a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, an electric motor and a dedicated four-speed hybrid transmission. That system is quoted at 306 kW and 800 Nm of torque, with an electric range of up to 135 kilometres under the Chinese test cycle.
This is where the comparison with the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 becomes meaningful. Toyota built the new 250 Series Land Cruiser on the GA-F body-on-frame platform and preserved the model’s central promise: durability, off-road ability and everyday usability. Nissan is moving toward the same customer, but adds a plug-in hybrid to the equation, something the Toyota Prado does not yet offer in the same form in its global line-up.
Nissan’s message is therefore clear: the Terrano must be more than a nostalgic nameplate. It is an attempt to build a new export-capable SUV platform in China, one suited to Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other markets where buyers value long range, towing ability, a robust body shape and lower fuel consumption. Nissan confirms that the Terrano production model is intended for selected global markets.
Nissan wants to raise its annual sales in China, including exports, to one million cars by fiscal year 2030. Under the same plan, China is to become a centre for development, cost efficiency and exports for the company, not just a sales market. That is a significant shift for a brand whose position in China has weakened in recent years under pressure from local electric vehicle makers.
The biggest question surrounding the Terrano concerns authenticity. If the production model gets only tougher styling and SUV-like hybrid technology, it will remain incomplete next to rivals such as the Prado and the GWM Tank. If Nissan gives the vehicle a strong chassis, proper four-wheel drive, substantial towing capacity and enough electric range, the Terrano could slot in below the Patrol, but clearly above an ordinary crossover.
Nissan needs such a vehicle. The brand’s off-road heritage is strong, but its product range has shifted in recent years toward softer SUVs. The Terrano’s return would give Nissan a chance to speak again in the same segment where buyers value mechanical trustworthiness as much as screens and software. A plug-in hybrid does not automatically make the Terrano a Prado killer, but it does give Nissan a weapon with which to attack one of Toyota’s best-defended positions: the point where the traditional off-roader and the new energy system meet.
