Leaf Reborn: Nissan’s Electric Icon Takes a Radical New Turn

When the Nissan Leaf first hit the market in 2010, it was like a grenade lobbed into the world of electric cars. Now, fifteen years and 700,000 units later, Nissan is gearing up to shake things up once again. The third-generation Leaf, set for an official unveiling on June 18, is no longer just an electric hatchback. It has been reimagined into something bolder, taller, and far more aerodynamic, a crossover with an edge.

Forget everything you knew about the Leaf. This new model shares its CMF-EV platform with the Nissan Ariya, which means a completely flat floor and a spacious cabin. Its exterior now wears a sporty fastback silhouette that manages to look both elegant and aggressive. The European version has pushed its drag coefficient down to 0.25, thanks to redesigned mirror housings and wheels.

Earlier versions of the Leaf were known for their modest range. Not anymore. The new model promises up to 600 kilometers on a single charge, made possible by a larger battery pack and improved energy efficiency. It also supports faster charging: adding 200 kilometers of range in 40 minutes. Most notably, it now adopts Tesla’s charging standard, unlocking access to the expansive Supercharger network.

The interior has been fully overhauled too. A dual-screen dashboard merges the driver display with the infotainment system, creating a modern, user-friendly cockpit. A panoramic glass roof, using electrochromic technology, lets occupants control the light and ambiance, delivering comfort and openness in every condition.

Production of the new Leaf will take place in Sunderland, UK.
