Mitsubishi Recasts Renault Scenic as the New Eclipse Cross
Mitsubishi’s latest Eclipse Cross was not born from a blank sheet of paper. Instead, it arrives with a distinctly French backbone, borrowing Renault’s Scenic E-Tech architecture and draping it in Japanese styling cues.
Mitsubishi has unveiled the European-market Eclipse Cross, first previewed earlier this year. The headline news is its transformation into a fully electric model, built on the same platform as the Renault Scenic E-Tech, sharing bodywork and drivetrains. Production will also be handled by Renault at one of its French plants, with sales scheduled to begin by late 2025.
Compared with its predecessor, the Eclipse Cross now adopts a far more conventional five-door body style. The overall length shrinks slightly to 4470 mm (down from 4545 mm), but the wheelbase stretches by 115 mm to 2785 mm, creating noticeably more cabin and cargo space. Boot volume now spans from 478 to 1670 liters depending on seat configuration.
The styling divergences from Renault’s Scenic are found mainly up front. Mitsubishi has fitted its own grille, bumper design and signature lighting treatment. Distinctive alloy wheels of up to 20 inches also set it apart. Subtle chrome accents and a revised rear light signature provide further differentiation at the back.
Step inside, however, and the déjà vu is undeniable. The cabin is almost a direct lift from the Scenic, complete with twin displays (12- and 12.3-inch), the chunky steering wheel and switch-laden center console. Mitsubishi’s contribution is limited to new trim options. Buyers will be able to specify ambient lighting, a Harman Kardon audio system and an electrochromic panoramic roof.
At launch, Europe will receive the Eclipse Cross in its most powerful configuration: a single 218-hp electric motor paired with an 87 kWh battery. Official range claims exceed 600 kilometers. A more affordable variant will follow later, likely borrowing Renault’s 170-hp motor and 60 kWh pack, with a range of around 420 kilometers.
