MINI and Deus Ex Machina Create Two One-Off JCWs

The Skeg is an all-electric JCW inspired by surf culture. Its yellow-and-silver body incorporates semi-transparent fiberglass panels that both reduce weight and echo the construction of surfboards. Roof-mounted straps reference the ritual of tying down a board, while inside, neoprene-trimmed seats and racks for wetsuits complete the theme.

The Machina, by contrast, is a raw internal-combustion JCW built as a track weapon. Finished in red, white and black, it features flared arches, four bonnet-mounted spotlights and a Can-Am-style rear wing that nods to rallying history. The cabin strips away polish in favor of utility, with a visible roll cage, five-point harnesses and workshop-style finishes.

MINI design chief Holger Hampf describes the pair as “a raw, handcrafted approach,” where authenticity and mechanical honesty take precedence over perfection. Visible stitching, analog switches and levers emphasize unvarnished functionality in defiance of today’s digital polish.

The visual identity was shaped by Deus Ex Machina creative director Carby Tuckwell and designer Matt Willey, who drew inspiration from historic racing Minis. The result is a set of bold, emotional design statements that tie both cars together as one project.

The collaboration extends beyond the showcars themselves. At the IAA Mobility show in Munich (September 6–14, 2025), MINI and Deus will also unveil a special JCW x Deus capsule collection, aiming to translate their shared DNA of craftsmanship, precision and lifestyle into apparel.
