MG S5 EV: The Electric Family Car That Costs Less Than a Smartphone
MG has taken its electric SUV, draped it in sports car design, fitted it with a giant screen and an arsenal of driver-assist tech, then slapped on a price tag that’s making rivals sweat. The S5 EV is aiming to be Europe’s most accessible electric family vehicle.
Powered by a 170 kW motor delivering 350 Nm of torque and offering two battery options—49 or 64 kWh—the S5 EV boasts a range of over 400 kilometres. But here’s the kicker: it starts at just €19,990.
Its design could easily pass for a Cyberster-inspired coupé that decided it was time to settle down. Smooth contours, a sporty silhouette, 17-inch alloy wheels and a front end lit by LED eyes.
Inside, MG has installed a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen with a response time that puts the iPad to shame. Right next to it sits a 10.25-inch digital display that shows more information than an air traffic control tower.
Tech-wise, it outclasses many laptops. Standard equipment includes:
MG Pilot driver-assist suite with 16 functions, including adaptive cruise control and emergency braking
Parking sensors and a reversing camera
Navigation and wireless CarPlay / Android Auto
The MG iSmart mobile app
Automatic lighting and much more
And yes, all of this comes even in the base trim. In the S5 EV’s world, "entry-level" is no longer an insult—it’s a compliment.
As for charging, 24 to 28 minutes is enough to get you back on the road, whether that’s home or the office. Performance specs? MG is still keeping those under wraps.
