The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Undergoes the Most Extensive Facelift in its History
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius has provided a rare behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming refresh of the S-Class (W223), calling it one of the most substantial modernizations in the model's storied history. The S-Class, which has served as the automotive industry’s technological lighthouse for decades, is moving far beyond simple cosmetic tweaks to its bumpers and lights. More than half of the vehicle’s components have been either thoroughly redesigned or replaced entirely, resulting in over 2,700 new parts in the updated flagship.
Visually, the most striking change is a radiator grille that has increased in size by 25 percent, alongside new lighting technology featuring a star-shaped signature—a direct nod to the Mercedes-Benz logo. To the delight of traditionalists, the classic three-pointed star remains proudly upright on the hood. Inside, the focus shifts toward even greater comfort and a digital revolution: the S-Class will be the first model to adopt the brand-new MB.OS operating system. This in-house developed software backbone enhances the voice assistant to such a degree that the need for physical buttons is minimized, though the company has not yet dared to abandon them entirely.
The most significant news, however, lies under the hood. At a time when many competitors are downsizing, Källenius announced that Mercedes has no intention of turning its back on its discerning clientele. The S-Class will receive a completely new V8 engine and will retain the legendary V12 powerplant in its lineup, though the latter’s availability will likely be restricted to specific markets and trim levels. Every engine variant will see a power boost, and all-wheel drive will now be included as standard equipment.
In addition to the new hardware, the Airmatic air suspension has been further refined to provide an even silkier ride. On the digital front, the new models are now capable of real-time data sharing, allowing them to warn other drivers of road hazards such as potholes or icy patches. The official debut of the S-Class is scheduled for January 29th, when Stuttgart’s pride must once again prove it is worthy of the title "the best car in the world."
