Mercedes cuts electric GLC price but keeps 800V charging

Mercedes-Benz is expanding the all-electric GLC range with two more affordable versions. The new GLC 250 and GLC 300 4MATIC bring the German starting price down to €64,736, yet keep an 85kWh battery, 800V electrical architecture and up to 320kW DC rapid charging. That makes the electric GLC a far more serious rival to the BMW iX3 and Audi Q6 e-tron.

The electric GLC no longer has to start above €71,000

Mercedes-Benz launched the electric GLC cautiously, opening the range with the GLC 400 4MATIC. That version has 360kW, a 94kWh battery and a starting price of €71,281.

The GLC 250 and GLC 300 4MATIC are now joining the order books in Germany. They reduce power and battery capacity, but keep the model’s most important technical advantage: its fast 800V charging system.

The GLC 250 starts at €64,736 in Germany, while the GLC 300 4MATIC begins at €68,306. That matters more than the price gap suggests at first glance. A starting price roughly €6500 lower moves the electric GLC away from being a niche luxury EV and closer to a conventional premium family SUV. It is still not cheap, but the buying argument becomes much more rational.

GLC 250 could be the sweet spot

The GLC 250 uses a single electric motor on the rear axle, producing 260kW. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 5.9sec and has a top speed of 210km/h. Usable battery capacity is 85kWh, while WLTP range reaches up to 647km in the German data.

That means the least expensive electric GLC is hardly a weak entry version. For a family SUV, 260kW is already more than enough, especially when delivered with the instant response of an electric powertrain. Rear-wheel drive should also help efficiency, because the car does not have to feed a second drive motor all the time.

That could make the GLC 250 the most sensible version for buyers who do not need four-wheel drive and do not want to pay for the full output of the GLC 400 4MATIC.

UK figures confirm the same technical picture. There, the GLC 250 is also listed with 260kW, an 85kWh battery, a 0-100km/h time of 5.9sec and a 10-80% charging time of 22 minutes. The UK range figure of up to 389 miles, or around 626km, also shows how much the official WLTP result depends on equipment, wheel size and type-approval configuration.

GLC 300 4MATIC looks like the logical middle ground

The GLC 300 4MATIC uses the same 85kWh battery, but adds a second electric motor and four-wheel drive. System output rises to 310kW, the 0-100km/h time drops to 4.7sec and WLTP range is up to 613km. In Germany, prices start at €68,306.

This may become the most strategically important version for Mercedes-Benz. The GLC 300 4MATIC is only €2975 cheaper than the GLC 400 4MATIC, so it is not selling itself purely on price. Its case is balance: four-wheel drive, very strong performance, a smaller battery and the same 320kW charging capability.

For buyers who do not need the 360kW flagship, the GLC 300 4MATIC offers much of the same everyday experience at a slightly lower price.

Mercedes has cut the battery, not the charging tech

The smartest decision is in the charging. The GLC 250 and GLC 300 4MATIC use an 85kWh battery, but keep the 800V architecture and up to 320kW DC rapid charging. A 10-80% charge takes 22 minutes, the same as in the GLC 400 4MATIC with its 94kWh battery. The flagship can charge at up to 330kW, but in real use the extra 10kW is unlikely to be decisive.

That preserves one of the electric GLC’s strongest features. On long journeys, comfort is not determined only by battery size, but also by charging speed and the consistency of the charging curve. If the smaller-battery GLC can make the same 22-minute charging stop, the GLC 250 loses some range on paper without becoming a slow long-distance companion.

BMW iX3 is the toughest test

The new BMW iX3 is the electric GLC’s most serious rival. According to BMW’s official UK figures, it offers up to 500 miles, or around 805km, of WLTP range, up to 400kW charging and up to 371km of range added in 10 minutes.

In Germany, BMW has also introduced a cheaper entry-level iX3. It starts at €67,200 and uses a 235kW rear-wheel-drive powertrain, an 82.6kWh 800V battery, up to 637km of WLTP range and up to 300kW DC charging.

In that light, the GLC 250 becomes particularly interesting. Mercedes offers more power, a slightly larger battery and similar range for €64,736. BMW is likely to counter with better efficiency, the freshness of Neue Klasse and the image of a bigger technological leap.

For buyers, the choice becomes very specific. Mercedes offers the more familiar, more luxurious GLC experience. BMW brings the story of a new-generation electric platform.

Audi Q6 e-tron plays a different hand

The Audi Q6 e-tron sits in the same class, but with a slightly different emphasis. According to Audi’s official figures, the Q6 SUV e-tron performance produces 225kW, uses a 94.9kWh net battery and offers 556-661km of WLTP range. The Q6 SUV e-tron quattro produces 315kW, uses the same 94.9kWh net battery and offers 542-642km.

Audi’s advantage is the larger battery and the mature charging architecture of the PPE platform. Mercedes responds with a smaller but still fast-charging battery and the comfort-led cabin image associated with the GLC. If the Audi appeals to a more technically minded buyer, the GLC targets the same customer with a softer, more traditional premium experience.

The electric GLC is now properly in the European fight

The cheaper versions change what the electric GLC represents. The GLC 400 4MATIC was the technological flagship. The GLC 250 and GLC 300 4MATIC turn the model into a real sales contender, one that can be compared directly with the BMW iX3, Audi Q6 e-tron and other European premium electric SUVs.

Mercedes-Benz is making a sensible move. It is not cutting the platform, charging system or basic vehicle concept. It is offering the same core electric SUV with a smaller battery and a calmer performance level. This is not a race to the bottom, but a normalisation of the model range.

For European buyers, that is good news. Choosing an electric car does not have to mean taking the most expensive, most powerful version with the largest battery. The more compelling combination may be an 85kWh battery, 320kW charging, more than 600km of WLTP range and a price that puts the GLC directly alongside BMW and Audi.
