Mercedes-AMG GT 53 trades outright power for up to 809 km of range

Mercedes-AMG is expanding its all-electric GT 4-Door Coupé line-up with the GT 53. The entry-level all-wheel-drive model uses two electric motors, produces up to 400 kW and, according to preliminary WLTP figures, offers as much as 809 km of range. Prices in Germany start at €115,430.

The GT 53 sits below the 600 kW GT 55 and 860 kW GT 63. Whereas the more powerful versions use three axial-flux motors, the GT 53 relies on two permanent-magnet synchronous motors. The trade-off is less outright performance, but improved efficiency, greater range and a lower entry price.

Sales in Germany begin on 13 August 2026.

Two motors instead of three

The GT 53’s electric powertrain develops up to 400 kW, with one permanent-magnet synchronous motor on each axle. Fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is standard.

The rear motor is paired with a two-speed transmission, while the front motor acts as a boost unit and can be disconnected when it is not needed, reducing drag and improving efficiency.

Mercedes-AMG quotes 0–100 km/h in 3.5 seconds when measured with a one-foot rollout. That method excludes the first 30.48 cm of movement from the timing. From a conventional standing start, AMG quotes 3.9 seconds, making the distinction important when comparing the GT 53 with European acceleration figures measured without rollout.

Up to 809 km on a charge

The GT 53 uses a 106 kWh usable high-voltage battery operating at 800 V. Its cylindrical cells are cooled directly by a non-conductive oil, allowing heat to be removed efficiently during both high-performance driving and rapid charging.

Mercedes-AMG gives the GT 53 preliminary combined energy consumption of 15.6–18.5 kWh/100 km and quotes a maximum WLTP range of up to 809 km.

Those figures are not yet final. Homologation is still ongoing, and Mercedes-AMG explicitly lists the GT 53’s technical data as provisional.

Range is the clearest distinction between the GT 53 and its more powerful siblings. The GT 55 develops 600 kW and the GT 63 up to 860 kW, while the GT 53 gives up some performance in return for lower energy consumption and a longer distance between charges.

Charging power reaches 600 kW

One of the electric GT’s most striking technical figures is its peak DC charging power of up to 600 kW. Mercedes-AMG says the GT 53 can add as much as 534 km of WLTP range in ten minutes under the specified charging conditions.

That peak figure places the GT 53 among the fastest-charging production EVs announced to date. In real-world use, however, charging performance will depend on the charger, battery temperature, state of charge and the car’s charging curve. The 600 kW figure is a peak rather than a rate sustained throughout the charging session.

The 800 V architecture and direct battery cooling are central to that capability. AMG’s aim is not only to deliver an exceptionally high charging peak, but also to keep battery temperatures under control during sustained high loads and repeated hard acceleration.

The GT 53 gets a digital straight-six soundtrack

Despite its electric powertrain, AMG has not abandoned the idea of an emotional combustion-engine-style experience. The AMGFORCE Sport+ driving programme simulates gearshifts, brief interruptions in drive and the sound character of an internal-combustion engine.

While the more powerful GT variants use a V8-inspired experience, the GT 53 takes its acoustic inspiration from the 3.0-litre straight-six used in the previous Mercedes-AMG E 53 Coupé.

AMG’s acoustic engineers recorded the original engine from 16 microphone positions inside and outside the car and carried out more than 100 measurements on a rolling road. The resulting digital model varies the soundtrack according to acceleration, load and simulated gearshifts.

It does not turn the GT 53 into a combustion-engined AMG, of course, but it illustrates how seriously Affalterbach is taking driver feedback and theatre in the electric era.

Air suspension is standard

The GT 53 comes with AMG Ride Control air suspension and adaptive damping as standard. The system is designed to combine long-distance comfort with the body control expected from an AMG.

The more powerful GT 55 and GT 63 use more elaborate active chassis technology, making the GT 53 mechanically simpler in some respects. That fits the model’s broader philosophy: less extreme performance, a lower price and greater range.

Aerodynamics also play a significant role. A standard active rear spoiler adjusts its angle according to the driving situation, while an optional active AEROKINETICS rear diffuser can alter the airflow to reduce drag, particularly at higher speeds.

The GT 53 could be the sweet spot of the electric GT range

By AMG standards, 400 kW is no longer an extraordinary figure, but it still provides substantial performance for road use. The GT 53’s real strength lies in the combination of fully variable all-wheel drive, up to 809 km of preliminary WLTP range and peak DC charging power of up to 600 kW.

Its €115,430 starting price in Germany also makes it considerably more accessible than the GT 55 and GT 63.

That arguably makes the GT 53 the most interesting compromise in the range. The GT 55 and GT 63 pursue maximum performance, while the GT 53 uses the same AMG.EA electric architecture to prioritise efficiency, range and price.

If final homologation preserves a WLTP figure above 800 km, the GT 53 could prove to be the most rational version of the new electric AMG GT.
