Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 Takes Nürburgring Compact-Class Record

Record Set on the First Attempt

AMG development engineer Kevin Berger set the time on 28 July 2026. The air temperature was 24°C, while the track surface reached 30°C. The lap was recorded using calibrated timing equipment, with a notary supervising the attempt and TÜV Rheinland confirming that the car matched series-production specification.

Mercedes-AMG describes the CLA 45 as the new record holder in its segment. In outright terms, its 7:32.070 lap beat the Audi RS 3’s previous compact-class benchmark of 7:33.123 by 1.053 seconds.

The record car ran on Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tyres and was equipped with the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, including the RACE drive programme, adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension and an active rear spoiler. Its Predictive Performance Manager allocated battery energy according to the circuit’s topography and driving conditions, ensuring that maximum performance was available where it had the greatest effect on lap time.

Three Motors Deliver 500 kW

The CLA 45 uses three liquid-cooled axial-flux electric motors: two on the rear axle and one at the front. Together, they deliver up to 500 kW of peak output. The fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system continuously distributes torque between the front and rear axles, while the two rear motors can be controlled independently to send more torque to the outside wheel in a corner.

Mercedes-AMG quotes a 0–100 km/h time of 2.7 seconds. However, that figure includes a one-foot rollout, meaning the first 30.48 cm of travel is excluded from the timed run. With the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, top speed increases to 270 km/h.

Range and Efficiency Figures Remain Provisional

A battery with 94 kWh of usable capacity gives the saloon a provisional WLTP range of more than 670 km. Combined energy consumption is quoted at 16.5–18.7 kWh/100 km. Mercedes-AMG notes that these figures have not yet completed final type approval.

The 800-volt electrical architecture supports DC charging at up to 330 kW. At a suitable charger, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes. Mercedes-AMG plans to begin sales in August 2026.

The CLA 45’s record demonstrates more than its 500 kW peak output. The Nordschleife places heavy demands on battery cooling, energy management and sustained power delivery throughout a lap. In those areas, a time of 7 minutes 32.070 seconds provides compelling evidence of how effectively Mercedes-AMG has integrated the car’s electric powertrain and thermal-management systems.
